Notes
John Glubb joined the Arab Legion in 1930. Between 1929 and 1956 he led it as the Commanding General. He had transferred to Iraq in 1920 following his service in the war with the Royal Engineers. It was in 1930 that he transferred to the Arab Legion. The concept of the Arab Legion was basically a continuation of T.E. Lawrence's "Arab Army" which of course played an important part in the Allied Palestine Campaign. During Glubb's time with the Legion, it was transformed into one of the best trained forces in the Arab world. Because of the Legion's antecedents, as described above, we have categorised this book in the "Lawrence" section. Whatever, the story of the Arab Legion is important in understanding how we got from the end of the war to the present day, in this region.
