There is an Introduction to the American Edition by Hajo Holborn of Yale University. There is a Further Introduction to the British Edition by James Joll of the LSE. Finally, there are four Forewords by the author (this book is the Fourth Edition). As one of the reviews of this book stated, "a book at once scholarly and dramatic; without it neither the history of modern Germany nor the First World War can be adequately understood".
