Notes
Vann was one of only three Anglican clergymen to command a battalion on the Western Front in the Great War, and the only Church of England cleric to win the Victoria Cross as a combatant.. He came from a relatively humble background in Northamptonshire. He was a talented sportsman, by the age of 19 he had played centre-forward for Northampton Town, Derby County, and Burton United. He also played hockey for Leicestershire. He became a hockey blue at Cambridge, and was captain of football at Jesus College. He joined up in August 1914 and served until 3rd October 1918, when he was killed during the crossing of the Hindenburg Line, commanding the 6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. This is a well written book, full of interesting detail.
