Notes
This book was translated from the original Polish by Jasper Tilbury. The book, as its publishers say, sets out to "salvage the memory" of the experiences of war in the lands between Riga and Skopje, beginning with the two Balkan Wars of 1912/1913 and ending with the death of Emperor Franz Josef and the end of the German campaign to defeat Rumania in late 1916. The First World War in the East and South-East of Europe was fought by people from a multitude of nationalities, most of them dressed in the uniforms of three imperial armies - Russian, German, and Austrian. The authors chart the origins and outbreak of the early battles, and the war's impact on ordinary soldiers and civilians.. It appears that a further volume is intended to be published, presumably covering the rest of the war.
