Notes
Soon after entering the war in 1917, American propaganda promised that the USA would "darken the skies over Europe" by sending over the "Greatest Aerial Armada ever seen". The promise was to build 22,000 aircraft within a year, and to field a force of 4,000 aircraft. None of this happened, and at the time of the Armistice, only a few hundred machines had arrived. This book is the story of those promises, and their failure.
