Notes
Books about the various theatres of war in the conflict which we study in the Collection, the actions which were fought there, and the people who fought them, may be the obvious target for any collection such as ours, but the war could not have been prosecuted properly without all the background activities, one of the most important of which was transport, and crucially the rail system. Frankly, there are not enough books which deal with this subject comprehensively, but this one goes some way to start plugging the gap. Foley is one of the most respected and admired amateur military historian writing about the Great War. As he started his own career on the railways, he brings familiarity to the subject, which he treats well.
