This is an extraordinarily comprehensive history of the background leading up to the outbreak of the First World War, written by one of the Twentieth Century's most famous modern historians. Whilst there are various different views about Taylor nowadays, this is a genuinely helpful study of what Taylor called "the European Balance of Power", which he proposed subsisted right through the period covered by the book, but then failed to survive the war. The book may be vintage, but it is still a valuable one for the Collection to have.
