Notes
The Third Afghan War, fought in 1919, was the only time that Afghan troops of any description invaded what was then British India. This book is a description of a little known incident in this even more unknown war. The action arose out of the loss of an R.A.F. aircraft in late June 1919. Those soldiers and airmen who fought in the action had been trained for service on the Western Front, but they found themselves in this strikingly different set of surroundings and circumstances. So while the book is built around this supposedly minor action, inevitably it also reflects the greater was (i.e. the Third Afghan War) and in reading it the student will be able to capture what that conflict was like, as well as the surrounding strategical circumstances which gave rise to the war.
