Notes
The Treaty of Lausanne, signed in 1923, officially settled the conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Allies. The Treaty established the borders of the modern Turkish Republic, but also defined boundaries, political systems, and understandings of citizenship in the newly former post-Ottoman nano-states. The author traces how the provisions of the Treaty led to the compulsory "unmixing of people" that facilitated the persecution of minority groups, including Armenians, Kurds, and Arabs. Thus the Treaty marked the end of the League of Nations project of self-determination and security for small peoples, and was crucial in shaping the modern Middle East, and also dictatorships in Turkey and elsewhere.
