Notes
This letter, dated 5th July 1916, was written by a driver in the Artillery from Hull, where he was on leave - with his family. He was writing to his sister in Edinburgh, which was too far for him to travel to during his leave. He wrote the letter on leave because it would not be censored. So in that respect, it does tell us more than a letter from the Front would. The writer was in the 19th Battery, but of what greater Army organisation is not known. This was a battery of 8 inch howitzers, so it was one of the heavier units. The writer was involved in the transporting of the shells from the depot to the guns.
