Notes
This book is part of the Series "Publications de la Sorbonne". It is marked "N.S. Recherches - 8, Universite de Paris 1 - Pantheon-Sorbonne" The book is, of course, written in French. In the book the author details the role that Petain played in the French military in the First World War, and the challenges he faced. He writes about the many crises that Petain encountered (including the crisis of discipline and the crisis of doubt), and the strategies he employed to solve them. He aimed to preserve the French Army's role as an important actor within the Allied coalition and propel France as a whole into the role of leading the peace negotiations. He is shown as a controversial figure who ultimately played a fundamental role in the Allied victory.
