Notes
This is the diary of Kate Luard, who was a professional nurse who had served with the British Army in the South African War. She volunteered for overseas service immediately the Great War started, and certainly by the middle of August 1914 she was serving with the colours and was about to sail for France. This book complements "Unknown Warriors. The Letters of Kate Luard, RRC and Bar, Nursing Sister in France, 1914 - 1918", edited by Stevens & Stevens. That book starts in late 1915 and goes right through the war. It mainly describes Luard's time spent as a senior member of the medical staff in various Casualty Clearing Stations. This book, though, is Luard's diary of the period between the opening of the war and when the "Unknown Warriors" starts. During this early part of the war, Luard worked mostly on Ambulance Trains, but also for a short period in later 1915 in a Field Ambulance. Her writing is very descriptive and is certainly by a long way the best description of Ambulance Trains that we have seen. Luard published the book in 1915. It is available in its original form, but at an outrageous price. We have instead chosen to go for this version, which has been put together by an Indian publisher which specialises in long out of print books which are nevertheless of some importance, as this one is.
