Notes
This is one of Naval & Military's wonderful facsimile copies of the original publication. In this case, it is the "Special War Transportation Number" of the Railway Gazette, which was published on September 21st, 1920. The book has 160 large size pages crammed with articles (in very small print!) and images. Taking images first, there are 51 pages of photographs, mostly two images to a page, with some pages having four images. The text is mostly about rail operations on the Western Front, although there are sections on rail operations in Mesopotamia, Salonika, East Africa, Palestine, Italy, and even the Trans-Siberian Railway. There are also a number of general articles dealing with the workings of the railways. The book is packed with useful and interesting information. Particularly on the Western Front, the rail network and its operation were of a size which will surprise the reader, and the whole operation was absolutely crucial to the war effort. We hope this will be followed by other books on this specific subject, but this one will take some beating.
