Notes
This is a most wonderful book, oversized with 113 pages of text followed by 56 full page "plates". There is as a frontispiece a splendid photograph of Allenby in desert uniform. The photo is signed "Edmund H.H. Allenby, General". We are assuming that the photo which was used in the book was a signed photo, although this is by no means clear. The text begins with Allenby's Despatches of 16th December 1917, 18th September 1918, and 31st October 1918. There then follows the Order of Battle of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force with which are included the names of General Officers and a brief record of service of the major formations. Then there follows Brief Records of the work of various branches of the Army. The plans are magnificent. There is a series of them depicting "Advance Through Philistia"; then a further series depicting "Advance Into Judaea"; then one showing "Occupation of Jerusalem"; then three showing "Advance Into Mount Ephraim and Sharon"; the "Area occupied as Results of Operations"; "Capture of Jericho"; "Amman Raid"; "Es Salt Raid"; "British Dispositions"; "Advance into Samara"; "Advance to and Through Galilee"; "Capture of Damascus", etc. The maps are beautifully produced and show all Allied and Turkish dispositions on an unfolding basis.
