Notes
The sub-title of this book is "Behind the Lines in Poperinghe". It is a companion volume to Chapman's previous book in the "Cameos of the Western Front" series, "A Haven in Hell. Ypres Sector 1914 - 1918", which is about Talbot House. These books were nos 1 and 2 in a planned trilogy. Whilst this book does not concentrate on Talbot House at all, it is right that the two volumes sit side by side in the same sub-category. Volume 1 was all about Talbot House, this volume is about what life was like for the troops generally in Poperinghe, so that to understand fully about Talbot House, it is necessary to understand what the town was like, and how it functioned. Poperinghe was an absolutely crucial factor in the fighting in the Ypres sector. It was not only the centre for much of the logistical support, but also a place known to all the troops who fought in the Salient. It is therefore right that the two books should live together in our Collection, even although this book has little to say about Talbot House.
