Notes
This is, apparently, an original publication from Naval & Military. The subject is something of an esoteric one. How many people know that there was a "Home Guard" in the Great War? The book is oversized, with about 150 pages. It starts with a short history of the Volunteer Training Corps, then there is a chapter about "The Volunteer Training Corps Gazette", which is something else very few of us were aware of. The next chapter is a long one - about 80 pages long - which is "Notes from The Volunteer Training Corps Gazette". This is an alphabetical list of all the individual groups. It starts with the Alleyn Volunteer Training Corps, and finishes with The Worcester Cadet Battalion. (Despite these names, the great number of units were adult ones). The next chapter is "Higher Organisation", e.g. Artillery, Engineers, Medics and so on. Many of these units became genuine service battalions during the war. This is a good reference book for this organisation, and it also gives us an insight into its workings.
