Notes
This is a book which was first published in 1929. The publisher is unknown. The version we have here is Naval & Military's usual very competent facsimile reproduction of the original. The book is stated to have been compiled by John R. Innes, who we cannot trace, and it is unclear if he is a modern editor, or was the original editor. There are two "books" within the one volume, both without titles. Book 1 is about the background to the formation of the Observation Groups and Sound Ranging Sections, Book 2 is more about descriptions of the actual work in the field, in various locations; i.e., not only on the Western Front. Some of the chapters are ascribed to individual authors. It is fine to have a number of books describing the artillery's war, as we do, but this is the first one we have which deals with the fine tuning of what a gun can do. In other words, how does the artilleryman ensure that the shell lands more or less (or even precisely) where he wants it to? We hope to add to this type of book in the future.
