Notes
This is (at the time of cataloguing) a twenty-odd year old study of the whole period of the Hundred Days, from the point of view of the B.E.F. We have in the Collection some contemporary accounts of this campaign, and others which are relatively or precisely modern, as well, of course, as a number of books which deal with individual battles/actions throughout the Hundred Days. But this book dates to the very end of the last century, and is by two senior Sandhurst lecturers, so it deserves its place in the Collection. The authors present a story of how the B.E.F. (including the Canadians, the Australians and other Dominion troops as elite forces) put into practice all the costly lessons of four years intensive fighting, employing battle-proven technology and tactics to win a series of impressive victories. They also bring an assessment of Haig's generalship, which is much more balanced than those of the "Lions and Donkeys" era, not so very distant at the time this book was published. One other point...... not to take anything away from the academic value of this book, it is written in a most accessible way, for which the authors are to be commended.
