Notes
This book was first published in 1935 by Longmans, Green & Co. John Keegan, the eminent military historian, regarded the book as one of the best 100 non-fiction books of the Twentieth Century. The book is a masterpiece. In 350 pages of text and 50 of Appendices, broken only by maps and plans (no other images!), it tells the story of the whole campaign, from the onset of the action in the West, right through to the conclusion of the (First) Battle of the Marne. The book is written in a very accessible way but this is in no way detrimental to its academic importance. Each significant action, wherever it might have been, is treated properly, and the book opens with a discussion of both German and French war plans. We already have significant bibliography of this campaign, but this book should be, at the very least, the starting point for any serious student of the opening weeks of the war on the Western Front.
