Notes
This book was first published in 2007 by Leuven University Press. It is the first book to provide a detailed account of the German invasion of Belgium in August 1914, as it affected civilians. It is based on eyewitness accounts - the book chronicles events in and around the towns of Liege, Aarschot, Andenne, Tamines, Dinant and, significantly, Leuven. The book chronicles the German Army's policy, which was derived from the highest command structures, of terrorising the civilian population on a systematic basis. The book is written in a most accessible style, and - horrifying as it is - will be of interest to the layman; but it is, we suggest, of even greater significance for the serious student of the war and particularly the attitude of the German Army right from the beginning.
