Notes
Translated from the German by Eric Sutton. The book is reproduced from the original by kind permission of the Central Library, Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. This is the War Diaries of Major-General Max Hoffmann. He spent the war as Chief of the General Staff to the Commander-in-Chief, Army of the East. He was a professional career soldier and always resented Hindenburg and Ludendorff for taking the whole credit for what was a pretty successful war for the Germans in this theatre. Volume 1 has an Introductory chapter about Hoffmann himself. Most of the book is then taken up with the actual war diaries kept by Hoffmann. These are written in very accessible language and as well as giving endless detail of the German Army's war in the East, they reveal the character of the author.
