Notes
This is a book, by an author who was apparently involved with Army Intelligence at the time, about, mainly, the part of the Secret Service in the war. As the author comments, to compile a full account of the Secret Services during the war would involve writing a history of the war itself. So what Aston has done is give a sketch account of the development of military intelligence up to the outbreak of the war, and then concentrate on a few outstanding incidents, and upon the branches of the Secret Service which definitely affected the issue. For us, what makes this book important is that it was entirely written by someone who was clearly heavily involved with Intelligence during the war. This is its value.
