Notes
This book is a study of one of the communities which made a sustained and extraordinary effort during the war. The archives of Wakefield Grammar School provided a rich source of information for this book. Over 500 male pupils of the school saw service, of these more than 80 were killed. Further, more than 200 female pupils took on new responsibilities at home and abroad. Thus, although the book is indeed about the efforts of just one school in the war, it is also a story about community effort which may be regarded as typical of what was happening throughout the country.
