Notes
This book covers a subject which is often forgotten, bypassed, or simply ignored because there is no real common knowledge of it. Protective structures such as pillboxes may be commonly thought to be mainly the preserve of the German Army, partly because as a Continental army, it was familiar with the need to protect borders with such structures, and partly because of the mainly defensive mode of the Germans on the Western Front throughout the war. But what is not appreciated fully is that by 1918 the British and their allies were to surpass the enemy in the design and construction, with supply and logistics, of such shell proof cover for troops and defensive positions. This book describes the history of development and innovation of concrete bunkers, blockhouses, and general concrete constructions during the war.
