Notes
At the Peace Conference in Versailles in 1919, the Allied representatives agreed to govern German and Ottoman territories under mandate from the newly formed League of Nations. By professing their attachment to humanitarian norms and international law, they sought to undercut claims to self determination, and to legitimize imperial rule. This book suggests that the overnight mechanisms they created undermined their authority. What they did, and/or sought to do, provoked a situation which caused the imperial system to lurch into crisis. The book offers an entirely new interpretation of the role of international organisations in shaping the modern world order, and is, accordingly, very germane to the whole purpose of The Collection.
