Notes
This is the story of an American civilian who spent some time in France, living in Paris but visiting Verdun both at the start of the battle and then when it was petering out, or possibly just finishing, but importantly having a spell with the Italian Army in between. This produced a slight problem about how we should categorise the book, but it is dedicated by the author to the Alpini and his description of the Italians on the Isonzo Front is very useful: so we have categorised it in "The Italian Army". So "Latin" in the title perhaps not only refers to the Italians and especially the Alpini (as he says, "good hosts, perfect comrades, valiant fighters") but also the French.
