Notes
This book could just as easily have been placed in the "Prelude to War" category, all the more so because Asquith commences his Preface with the observation that "this book is in no sense an autobiography". Yet it is a narrative of the prelude to war, starting with a description of Anglo-German relations from the late Victorian Era to the outbreak of war, with more emphasis as the author approaches August 1914, and then a description of the critical period between the Sarajevo Assassination and the actual commencement of hostilities, and finally, the entry into the war. Asquith was a major player throughout this period, so this is a story being told by someone who was present, in some way, at every point of the way, and who was in a supposedly influential position for quite some time. So we have decided that the book rightly belongs in the biography and autobiography category.
