Notes
This book contains the dispatches sent by Philip Gibbs, one of five accredited war correspondents, from the Western Front during the war. The book was published by his son, Anthony Gibbs. Given that Gibbs was "embedded" - to use a modern term - these dispatches are about as accurate a picture that could have been expected. But were they written under the hand of implied (at least) censorship, or even a desire to present a more palatable picture for home consumption. We suppose that will never be known, but for all that, the book is an interesting and valuable contribution to our knowledge of what the Western Front was really like.
