Notes
This is a pioneering and original book. The public school upbringing was evidenced in great measure during the war, and the authors argue this education imbued the young men at the Front with idealism, stoicism, and a sense of service. Their death rate was twice the national average, their approach to their duties, especially their care for the men under their command, is argued to have contributed significantly to this high casualty rate. This is a valuable book, dealing as it does with one of the main and lasting features of the officer/other ranks relationship engendered by the war, and - arguably - still very present in the army of today.
