Notes
There is a Foreword dating from June 1931 by Brigadier-General Stuart Heintzelman, Commandant of the U.S. Army War College, where the book was originally translated. The book is Von Schlieffen's treatise on the Battle of Cannae, the campaigns of Frederick the Great and of Napoleon, and the campaigns of 1866 and 1870. Historians have long considered Von Schlieffen's writings to be the foundation of Germany's military strategy in the Great War, and have hotly debated the reasons why the Schlieffen Plan, as executed, was a failure.
