Notes
This book was first published in 1980 by Collins. The book is important and relevant to The Collection for two reasons. First, that Asquith's letters from the Western Front, for a period of just over a year between 1915 and 1916 - spanning the Battle of The Somme (he was killed near the end of the Battle) -give us a good picture of what life in the trenches was really like. Secondly, the book actually spans the whole of Asquith's adult life, lived at the top end of the social scale - so it gives us an accurate picture of what life at that level was like in the years leading up to the war.
