Notes
46th North Midlands Division's action on 29th September 1918 was a hammer blow. This book suggests that it "shattered the will" of the German High Command. The action centred around the taking of the St. Quentin Canal, leading to the world famous image of the troops of 137 Brigade being addressed on the banks of the canal by their commander, Brigadier-General Campbell, VC. There is no doubt that by any standards this was a major step forward for the Allies in the middle part of The Hundred Days, and this is an accomplished description of this very important action.
