They were commissioned by the Office of Public Works of the Irish Republic and the Royal Irish Academy. All of the portraits were acquired for the Irish State Art Collection. The book is a collection of 40 separate biographies of the Easter Rising. The biographies have been taken from the Dictionary of Irish Biography. This is a wonderful book, it has a beauty of its own and its dignity reflects the way in which (most of )the subjects of the biographies are viewed in he modern day Ireland.
