Notes
The 8th Lincolns was a Service Battalion. At Loos, it was part of 63rd Brigade which was in the 21st Division. Loos was the battalion's first baptism of fire, it had only been in France for three weeks and was part of the reserves (the 21st and 24th Divisions) which were deployed into the battle. Parts of this reserve force retreated in a disorganised way in the face of very heavy German pressure, and the Lincolns were in the midst of this. Their reputation has suffered over the years as a result. This book is a new study of what it was that actually happened, and to a certain extent is something of a rehabilitation of their memory.
