Notes
Hugo Throssell was the son of a former Premier of Western Australia. He volunteered for the AIF and became a member of the 10th Australian Light Horse, which fought in a dismounted role at Gallipoli. He was involved in the famous charge at the Battle of The Nek, and also the Battle of Hill 60, where he won his VC. After the war Throssell became an outspoken critic of the war, for which he was widely condemned. He found employment difficult and fell into debt. When he tried to pawn his VC he was offered ten shillings for it. He committed suicide when he was 49. We have placed this book in the "Anzac" category, as opposed to "Gallipoli" or "Biographies", because it tells us so much about the AIF in the war, and the sad later life of one of Australia's finest soldiers.
