Notes
This is the story of the 17th Middlesex Battalion, also known as The Footballers' Battalion, which was, essentially, formed around players from Clapton Orient. The book acknowledges the Battalion's debt to the Battalion of the Royal Scots known as McCrae's Battalion, with their core of Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) players. The book is a moving account of how comradeship stood firm from Orient's ground in East London to the mud of The Somme.
