This is a book which was, perhaps, overdue. To our knowledge, there has been no book, certainly in recent times, which considered the inter-relationship of the troops with the terrain they were forced to live, and fight, in. There are sections in the book about the birds found on the battlefield, the horses, the lice and other vermin encountered, trench and POW gardens, flowers and botanists at the Front, trench pets, and so on. This is an unusual but very welcome book.
