Notes
The book was originally published in shorter form in 1981 by the same publisher. The copyright was established in 1915 by Kreisler and then renewed by him in 1943. The book appears to have been published much earlier by Houghton Mifflin Company. Kreisler had been an army officer before the war. On the outbreak of war he was living in Switzerland but returned to the colours. He reported for duty at Loeben, near Graz. He commanded a platoon of 55 men. At the same time his wife volunteered as a nurse. The regiment was posted to Galicia, in the vicinity of Lemberg. The book is very descriptive, it is one of the best accounts of the life of the ordinary soldier on the Eastern Front that we have, including tales of truces between Austrians and Russians - including real time fraternisation. Kreisler was badly wounded during an attack by Cossacks - that was the end of his war. This is a fantastic little book.
