Notes
This is a slightly oversize book of nearly 400 closely spaced pages. It obviously set out to be a comprehensive account of the city through the period of the war and the reader is not disappointed. It addresses transport (road, rail and water) issues; organisation of labour; industries and war supplies; care of the sick and wounded; the military effort; the call to the colours; the work of the port; and social and financial problems, amongst other matters. As well as being good in the sense of how it is written, the book is a lovely example of bookbinding times long gone, including uncut pages! The book was co-written by Charles Wells.
