The book was stated to have been compiled "from the records and with the assistance of twenty-nine officers and officials of the Naval and Military Services". The original German was translated by J.E. Gurdon. There is an Introduction by, and the book has been edited by Bob Carruthers, who was one of the U.K.'s leading military historians, having written a number of books on various conflicts and also produced and directed a number of documentary and feature films. The book itself is an accurate, faithful and comprehensive review of the aircraft, personnel, and organisation of the force which began life in 1910 as The Imperial German Army Air Service and ended the was as the Luftstreitkrafte.
