Notes
This book is a major contribution to the understanding of the "social" life of the Tommy stationed in the Ypres Salient. It has been written by someone who has lived a very major part of his life with Talbot House occupying a prominent role. Apart from his Introduction, the Author interferes with the story as little as possible, as the story of Talbot House it told by the reproduction of letters, diary entries, reminiscences, and so on, of the people who knew the place at the time. These together paint a graphic picture of a place of sanctuary. It was a very powerful place for the Tommy during the war, and its power has not declined. A visit to Talbot House will greatly help any visitor to the Battlefields to understand the whole story so much better.
