Notes
Verdun is a category where we look at new books very carefully, as there can easily be duplication. But where a new book addresses an aspect of the Battle which has little in the way of record in The Collection, we will always take it in. This book is in such a category. Verdun was an area studded with forts, some of them massive. But by 1916 the forts were largely "side shows" and did not play any really prominent part in the battle, save perhaps for their place in the public perception, which led to possibly useless expenditure of manpower. The authors, however, argue that Verdun itself actually caused something of a rethink in France about the efficacy of forts, and at least partly prompted the creation of the Maginot Line and similar constructions. The book is full of interesting photographs, and there are really good maps. The book was actually authored by the husband and wife team, J.E. & H.W. Kaufmann
