Notes
This is No. 15 in the Wolverhampton Military Studies Series; Series Editor, Stephen Badsey. The title of this book may seem somewhat "off the wall", but the book does address an important subject: how the troops, especially those in the trenches on the Western Front, survived, not only physically but mentally. What was available to them when they were "out of the line" was so important to them; sometimes it wasn't but when it was it would come as almost heaven sent. So whilst some might be shocked that an author has addressed this subject, they should not be. The author had a special interest in the social aspects of soldiering, and his subject is all about that. If we are to understand as much as we can about the war, we need to know about all aspects of it. We consider this book to be a significant addition to The Collection.
