Notes
This is all about "The First Day on The Somme". It is a series of fold-out panoramic photographs of the different parts of the front, from north to south. They show in modern times what the view from the parapet was. Each panorama is carefully marked. There are accompanying plans, of very high quality, which show the battalion positions, and there is a very helpful text Jolyon did not set out to produce an academic book, but we think he is being too modest. For anyone who wants to understand what the First Day was all about, they could do no better than have in front of them this book, and - for text - Middlebrook's masterpiece, which of course we have in The Collection.
