Notes
This book was edited by John Hutton. This is the diary of Henry Owens, who qualified as a doctor in 1913. He began his career at Poplar Hospital in East London as an Assistant House Surgeon. The Poplar Hospital for Accidents (originally set up by the East India Dock Company) was a good place to learn his trade, given what followed. Henry joined up immediately the war started, as a lieutenant in the RAMC. He was demobilised in January 1919. He died of septicaemia in January 1921 aged only 31. Henry joined the 3rd Cavalry Field Ambulance at the start of his military career. He had a very busy war, the diary is a very good insight into, first, what it was like to be "in the thick of it", and secondly, what the medical services for the front line troops were like.
