Notes
This book just has to be in the Collection, however discredited it now is. Clark was the progenitor of the "Lions Led By Donkeys" view of particularly the Western Front. In fact, the book really starts, after a few short chapters of lead-in, with Neuve-Chapelle and ends with the departure of French. Thus any theory of the system of command in the B.E.F. is very limited, and merely addresses the first part of a long learning curve, drawing what are now generally regarded as the wrong conclusions. But for all that, it is worth the read!
