Notes
Translated from the German by Claud W Sykes. As the Publishers' Note says in this book: "the author describes a war career which would be hard to beat for sheer variety and wealth of experiences". He joined up with a cavalry regiment at the start of the war. When trench warfare put an end to any real opportunities for action for the cavalry, he qualified as a machine gun officer and served in the Vosges. Then he joined the Air Service, and was posted to the Eastern Front as an Observer through the Brusilov Offensive. The following year he was transferred to the Western Front. Later still he worked in Intelligence. The descriptions of the wars end are very comprehensive. All of this adds up to a very valuable record.
