Notes
Green, the subject of this book, had been Assistant Priest at St. Barnabas, Heigham, Norfolk before and during the first part of the War. He joined the Army in early 1916 as a padre. His first appointment was to Casualty Clearing Station No. 22, then based at Aire-sur-la-Lys in Northern France. In December 1916, he was transferred to 1/4th Battalion, City of London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), part of 56th (London) Division. He proved to be something of an unexpected hero, being awarded the Military Cross twice. The book is a fairly comprehensive selection of the letters he wrote home to his congregation. They add considerably to our understanding of what it was like to be a padre on the Western Front.
