First published in 1918. William Bond, the subject of the story, was born in Chesterfield in 1889. By 1914 he was a sub-editor in the Paris office of the Daily Mail. He volunteered in 1914 and served with KOYLI at Gallipoli and in Flanders, winning the MC in 1916. Then he retrained for the RFC. He was shot down and killed by German anti-aircraft fire on 22nd July 1917, at which point he had 7 victories. The text has been annotated by Barry Marsden
