Notes
This book was edited by Major H. Shenton Cole. Nothing is known about him. There is a Foreword by Earl Haig, and an Introduction by Sir Eric Geddes. The 17th Battalion was raised and maintained from employees of the North Eastern Railway Co. The 32nd Battalion was formed as a reserve battalion for the 17th. It never went abroad, and, eventually - in December 1917, it was disbanded and re-badged as the 80th Training Reserve Battalion. It was after this change that recruits from sources other than the N.E.R. were admitted to the Battalions.
